Last Updated on September 4, 2018

You have decided to get a dog, and you want to arrange a purebred dog adoption. You are thinking, do shelters really have purebred dogs available?

To the surprise of many, there are many shelters and rescues that have purebred dogs available for adoption. You can also look at one of the many breed specific rescues.

People surrender purebred dogs for the same reasons that they surrender mixed breed dogs. You can click here to find out why many dogs end up in shelters or rescues.

Breed Specific Rescues

You might want to begin your search for a purebred dog adoption through breed specific rescue groups in your area. Many shelters will call a breed specific rescue when they receive a specific breed. This will allow more room for mixed breed dogs.

Breed specific rescues can provide a great deal of knowledge about the specific breed that they rescue. They will be able to answer any questions that you may have. They will also have information about each dog at the rescue.

If you can’t find the dog you are looking for in your local area, extend your search to include neighboring cities or states. Many rescue groups have transporters that are willing to meet you half way depending on the distance you are from them.

Start Searching

Petfinder
You can start your search at Petfinder and search for the dog you are looking for. Petfinder is a website that contains a database of animals available for adoption. Many shelters and rescue groups post information and pictures of dogs available for adoption.

First choose your location, the breed that you are looking for, choose an age group, and a gender. Then you can use advanced search filters to further narrow your search. Also, you can search for shelters and breed specific rescue groups.

Rescue Organizations

Search on the internet using the breed name along with a keyword like rescues, adoption or adoptable. For example, if you were looking for a Beagle you would use a search engine and search for “Beagle rescues near me” or “Beagle adoptions near me”.

Shelters

If they don’t have the dog you are looking for available, you can ask them to call you when they have one. You can also ask about a breed specific rescue nearby as shelters usually call them when they get a purebred dog.

Pet Supply Stores

Check your local pet supply stores for adoption events on the weekends. If you don’t find the dog you are looking for, then you can talk to the rescue staff that are at the event. They will have other dogs available for adoption that are not at the event and they may have the one for you.

Fostering

Consider fostering a dog that is available for adoption until you find the one that you can not live without. You will be helping a rescue dog adjust to living in a good home and giving them the love and care they need while you continue your search for the perfect dog for you.
