Our dogs are part of our family and we share many things with them, sometimes even our food. Some foods that we eat are not safe for your dog, so check out these 12 foods dogs should not eat.

There are foods that people eat that can make your dog sick and some foods can cause death. Below are some foods that can create problems with your dog’s health.

If you know your dog has eaten any of these foods, call your veterinarian, as early treatment can lead to a quicker recovery for your dog.

Chocolate

Chocolate, especially dark chocolate can cause vomiting, diarrhea, extreme thirst, pacing and panting. Large amounts can cause irregular heart, seizures, and death although it can take 6 to 12 hours for the symptoms to appear.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon in large amounts can cause low blood sugar, vomiting, diarrhea, heart rate increase or decrease, and liver damage. The powder form can irritate the lungs when it is inhaled and can cause breathing difficulties, coughing, and choking.

Garlic

Garlic can cause anemia and lead to organ damage, failure, or death. Symptoms may be pale gums, nausea, abdominal pain, an elevated heart rate, diarrhea, vomiting, increased respiratory rate, and weakness. The symptoms may not appear for several days.

Ice Cream

Ice Cream and most dairy products should be avoided, as most dogs are lactose intolerant and it will be hard to digest. Instead, you can give your dog frozen strawberries, raspberries, and pineapple chunks as a cold sweet treat.

Almonds

Almonds are not easy to digest and can cause an upset stomach and intestinal distress. Also, they can cause problems if they are not chewed properly as they could block the esophagus or tear the windpipe causing serious damage.

Macadamia Nuts

Macadamia nuts can cause vomiting, lethargy, inability to walk, tremors, depression, and increased body temperature. Usually, you will see symptoms within 12 hours after they have been eaten and symptoms may last up to 48 hours.

Grapes and Raisins

Grapes and raisins can lead to kidney damage, although some dogs can eat grapes and have no symptoms, other dogs will have symptoms. Symptoms can include vomiting, within a few hours. Later they may have diarrhea, excessive thirst and urination, or lethargy.

Onions

Onions can cause lethargy, pale gums, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, anemia, elevated heart rate, elevated respiratory rate, or even collapse. It may take several days before you see symptoms in your dog.

Cherries

Cherries can be harmful if your dog eats the plant or pit and could cause respiratory failure and death. They are also a chocking hazard and symptoms include dilated pupils, bright red gums, difficulty breathing, and shock.

Apricots

Apricots can cause respiratory failure and death if your dog eats the leaves, stems or seeds. Symptoms can include dilated pupils, difficulty breathing, bright red gums, and shock. Although the pulp of the fruit will not harm your dog.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes can cause gastrointestinal problems if your dog eats the stems, leaves, or the unripened green fruit. Symptoms can include vomiting and diarrhea, lethargy, weakness, and confusion although the red ripened fruit can be beneficial.

Sugar

Sugar and any food containing sugar can cause dental problems, weight gain and diabetes. Also be careful with foods containing corn syrup that can cause weight gain and dental problems which can cause more problems with your dog’s health later in life.
